What is Burnout?

Burnout is a 3-way shutdown of the BODY, BRAIN, and MIND. You’re not only physically exhausted, but also mentally and emotionally shut down.

With burnout, you begin to move from just fight or flight mode, into FREEZE mode. EVERYTHING seems overwhelming, and so you may tend to feel like you can’t even move beyond your current state.
Symptoms of Burnout:

Physical, mental, AND emotional exhaustion

Loss of drive and motivation toward goals

A high level of anxiety with constant “worst case scenarios” playing out in your mind

Easily triggered by the smallest of things (because your stress cup is FULL)

What Does Being a Millennial Have to Do with It?
Don't get me wrong, burnout is not specific to ONLY millennials. However, millennials tend to experience burnout more than other age groups. But why would that be? Think about it like this:

We grew up being told that good grades and a college degree would be the solution for success.

In addition, we were conditioned for competition. "Work really hard, and if you're not getting what you want, work harder".

A subconscious belief was formed from a very young age: "My level of WORTH is based on my level of PRODUCTIVITY" (not to mention that we were never taught how to process our emotions in healthy ways).

As we grew up, and witnessed some of the most emotionally impacting world events at an impressionable age (Columbine, 9/11, etc.), our brains literally changed. We were conditioned for a multitude of fears.
How Do I Recover and Heal from Burnout?

Because of our upbringing and the unfortunate series of events we encountered growing up, our subconscious has been programmed to use STRESS as the coping mechanism to escape...FUTURE STRESS!

And because so many of us STILL haven't realized the rewards from our efforts of working REALLY hard, our motivation is DRAINED. We no longer have the same goals (if any).
